William Fox-Pitt Wins Burghley
The Burghley 4* horse trials was this year won by William Fox-Pitt for Great Britain who was riding Parklane Hawk. This win is Fox-Pitts 6th Burghley and he is the first rider to have achieved this remarkable feat.
The dressage phase of the competition was dominated by Simone Deitermann riding Free Easy NRW who's score of 39.3 proved hard to beat, however the cross country phase proved as influential as ever with several riders running into difficulty in what was a typically large and challenging Burghley cross country course.
Fox-Pitt who was in second place after the dressage went clear and inside the cross country time allowing him a fence in hand over the show jumping, however Parklane Hawk jumped stylishly clear in difficult wet ground conditions picking up just one time fault to add to his score.
In second place was Andrew Nicholsen riding the exuberant chestnut 16.2 HH gelding Nereo who was in fourth after the dressage phase and who's superb cross country round and clear show jumping moved him up from 5th to 2nd place. Andrew's other ride Avebury unfortunately dropped from second to eighth place after picking up 12 faults during the show jumping.
Mary King riding her beautiful bay mare Kings Temptress also picked up a few time penalties around the cross country course and an unfortunate pole down over a very large upright left her in third place.
