There have been many well known artists through the centuries, each with their own unique skill and passion for Equine and Equestrian Art.
Renaissance Artists During The 14th Century
- Paolo Uccello
- Birth Name - Paolo di Dono
- Nickname - Uccello in Italian means bird and it was because of his fondness for painting birds that he was nicknamed Uccello.
- Born - In 1397.
- Died - December 10th, 1475.
- Nationality - Italian
- Equine Art - Uccello is well known for his equestrian paintings of The Hunt in the Forest and St George and the Dragon.
- Benozzo Gozzoli
- Birth Name - Benozzo di Lese
- Nationality - Italian
- Born - Born in the village of Sant'Ilario a Colombano around 1421.
- Died - He died in 1497
- Italian Renaissance painter.
- Equine Art - Gozzoli is well known for his detailed equestrian paintings, which can be seen in his paintings called Procession of the Magus Balthazar and the Procession of the Magus Caspar.
- Leonardo da Vinci
- Birth Name - The Italian painter was born Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci
- Nationality - Italian
- Born - He was born on April 15, 1452.
- Died - 2nd May 1519
- Equine Art - Leonardo Da Vinci is well known for his beautifully detailed sketches and paintings of horses, examples of his work are the Battle of Anghiari and the Study of Horses.
- Albrecht Dürer
- Birth Name - Albrecht Dürer
- Nationality - German
- Born - On May 21st in 1471 Nuremberg, Holy Roman Empire
- Died - April 6th, 1528.
- Painting and printmaking.
- Equine Art - He not only painted but also did some beautiful engravings, one in particular shows his great attention to detail and is called Knight, Death and the Devil.
- Raphael
- Birth Name - Raphael Sanzio
- Other Name - He was known by his first name which in Italian is Raffaello.
- Nationality - Italian.
- Born - Raphael was born in 1483.
- Died - Raphael died on April 6th, 1520.
- Artist -Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance.
- Equine Art - Raphael is well known for producing outstanding pieces of art which included that of horses, an example being St. George and the Dragon.
- Andrea Mantegna
- Birth Name - Andrea Mantegna
- Born - Around 1431
- Died - September the 13th, 1506
- Artist - Venetian Renaissance artist.
- Equine Art - His skill painting horses can clearly be seen in the wall paintings in the Camera degli Sposi in the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua. The horses that he included on The Triumphs of Caesar which are a series of paintings which show his attention to detail and tremendous skill as an artist.

- Birth Name - Tiziano Vecelli or Tiziano Vecellio.
- Other Name - During his lifetime the artist was also often called Da Cadore, taken from the place of his birth.
- Place Of Birth - Pieve di Cadore, near Belluno in the Republic of Venice.
- Born - Some time after 1473.
- Died - 27th of August 1576.
- Equine Art - Examples of his talent for painting horses are clearly seen with his painting of Emperor Charles V at Mühlberg in 1548.
Artists During The Baroque Era
Equine portraiture was becoming ever more popular with great artists such as Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Velazquez producing many wonderful equine and equestrian paintings. The painting of regal subjects and sporting racing scenes produced many very special pieces of equestrian art.

- Died - 30th of May 1640
- Equine Art - A beautiful painting of equestrian art is the Equestrian Portrait of the Duke of Lerma in 1603 which shows excellent detail and movement of the horse as does the painting called Hippopotamus Hunt which was done later in 1616.
- Anthony van Dyck
- Birth Name - Anthony van Dyck
- Place of Birth - Antwerp, Belgium.
- Born - 2nd of March 1599.
- Died - 9th of December 1641.
- Equine Art - There is beautiful equestrian detailing in both the painting of King Charles in 1635 and of Charles I with M. de St Antoine painted in 1633 both show how truly talented the artist was.
- Diego Velázquez
- Birth Name -Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez
- Nationality - Spanish
- Place of birth - Seville, Spain
- Born - 6th of June 1599
- Died - 6th of August 1660
- Equine Art - The Equestrian portrait of Count Duke de Olivares in 1634 is a beautifully detailed painting of the horse and of Count Duke de Olivares. Another example of how talented the artist was can be clearly seen in his painting of Prince Baltasar Carlos on Horseback which shows the young prince sat aboard his wonderful looking horse.
The Mid 18th Century Art
During the mid 18th century, paintings of race horses and hunting scenes were very popular with great artists such as Gericault, Delacroix and Stubbs producing many wonderful and detailed pieces of artwork.

- Birth Name - Théodore Géricault
- Place Of Birth - Rouen, France
- Born - 26th of September 1791
- Died - 26th of January 1824
- Equine Art - The Cheval Cabre is a beautifully detailed equine painting of a rearing grey stallion. Another fine example of his work is the equestrian painting called the Charging Chasseur which he produced in 1812 and also the excellent work of art called Horse in a Stable which is of a chestnut horse standing in the stable.
- Eugene Delacroix
- Birth Name - Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix
- Nationality - French
- Place Of Birth - Charenton near Paris, France.
- Born - 26th of April 1798
- Died - 13th August 1863 in Paris.
- Equine Art - Eugene Delacroix painted many wonderful works of ar30t which included horses including one called Arab Horses Fighting in a Stable in 1860 and Arab Saddling His Horse in 1855 which is of a stunning bay horse being saddled up by an Arab.
- George Stubbs
- Birth Name - George Stubbs
- Place Of Birth - Liverpool, England
- Born - August 25th, 1724
- Died - July 10th, 1806
- Equine Art - The most well known painting by Stubbs was commissioned by the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham and was called Whistlejacket, which is a stunning painting of a chestnut horse with a plain background behind it. Other popular paintings were Mares and Foals in a Landscape which was done around 1763 and Firetail with his Trainer which shows a wonderful racehorse with his trainer.
Equine sporting art was popular in the 19th century
Sporting scenes such as racing, steeplechasing, foxhunting and polo were very popular during the 19th century as well as paintings of the day to day life of horses, such as horses in fields gazing and resting in stables.

- Birth Name - Benjamin Marshall
- Place Of Birth - Seagrave, Leicestershire, England.
- Born - 14 October 1768
- Died - 29 January 1835
- Equine Art - Benjamin Marshal is known for racing scenes, one equestrian racing painting that Benjamin Marshall produced was called Grimalkin and another was called Pastime which shows an owner leading a bay racehorse towards the groom.

- Equine Art - One of Wards most well known equine paintings is that called Marengo which is of a beautiful white Arab horse.
- Henry Thomas Alken
- Birth Name - Henry Thomas Alken
- Place Of Birth - England
- Born - October 12th, 1785
- Died - April 7th, 1851
- Equine Art - Henry Thomas Alken produced many sporting scenes and paintings of equines such as the White Horse Running and the Jumping Horse both of which show the artists own unique talent for capturing the beauty of the horse.

- Other Name - John Frederick Herring I

- Born - In 1795
- Died - In 1865
- Equine Art - There are many wonderful paintings one shows a beautiful chestnut race horse in the stable and is called Painting of Pyrrhus the First in 1846, another piece of work called the Blacksmith Shop shows how very detailed his works of art are.
- James Pollard
- Birth Name - James Pollard
- Place Of Birth - Islington in London, England
- Born - 1792
- Died - 1867
- Equine Art - James Pollard produced many wonderful paintings of race horses, hunting scenes and of stagecoaches. Examples of his work can be seen with his painting Preparing to start which shows racehorses gathered at the start of a race. The Ascot Gold Cup in 1834 is another fine example of his style of artwork.
- Edgar Degas

- Born on July 19th, 1834
- Place Of Birth - Rue St. George, Paris, France
- Died - September, 1917
- Equine Art - He is well known for his racing scenes such as Racehorses in a Landscape and his painting called Race Horses shows race horses gathered at the start of a race. His painting Horses in a Meadow 1871 is another beautiful example of his artistic talent for painting equines.
- Sir Alfred Munnings
- Birth Name - Alfred James Munnings
- Place Of Birth - Mendham, Suffolk, England.
- Born - 8th of October, 1878
- Died - 17th of July 1959
- Equine Art - Munnings created many wonderful pieces of equine and equestrian artwork, his talents are clearly seen with his painting of Gallopper Light a beautiful dark bay race horse and of A Dragoon On A Dapple Grey Facing Left.
