Sidebone
This is where ossification (bone formation) of the cartilage around the Pedal or coffin bone occurs.

Causes

Excessive concussion on hard ground.
Poor conformation that leads to concussive problems.
Poor shoeing.
Direct trauma.

Horses at risk
Are those with toe in/out conformation and heavy draught horses.

Symptoms

Bony enlargements can be felt just above the coronary band.
In some cases there is lameness.
Shortness in the horses stride.

Treatment

Box rest.
Anti inflammatory drugs.
Correctative shoeing can help in some cases.
