Exercise Induced Pulmonary Haemorrhage (EIPH)
This is where blood vessels within the horses breathing apparatus rupture.
Causes
- When the need for oxygen is greater than the supply the blood vessels rupture. This is often in the lungs and from here the blood travels upwards to the nostrils.
- A allergy such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease can cause lung damage and subsequently EIPH.
- A virus can also weaken the lungs causing EIPH.
